What is an FCE?
A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a standardised, performance-based assessment to evaluate an individual’s ability to perform work-related tasks. It identifies physical strengths, limitations, and safe working capacity. The results are used to guide clinical decisions, return-to-work planning, medico-legal reporting, and to determine temporary and permanent incapacity.
When is an FCE needed?
FCEs are commonly used when there is uncertainty about a person’s ability to perform work safely and effectively. Situations include:
- Workers’ compensation and disability claims (temporary or permanent incapacity).
- Injury on duty (IOD) cases, to assess work ability post-injury, and make recommendations regarding restrictions, adaptations, or a graded return-to-work plan.
- Return-to-work or fit-for-duty evaluations.
- Insurance assessments: Insurance assessments are necessary if you have insured your profession and have suddenly been injured or contracted an illness. Such assessments are required to ensure that your income protection insurance can provide coverage during your recovery period.
- Medicolegal: Attorneys often refer clients who have been in an accident for an FCE (Road Accident Fund claims), medical negligence, or personal injury cases. There is a report that provides a detailed assessment of the client’s abilities, limitations, living conditions, and work capabilities after the injury.
- Functional Job Analyses: A functional job analysis involves an occupational therapist assessing the physical and cognitive tasks of a specific role to help create an accurate job description. This is useful for hiring, as it ensures candidates match the role’s demands. When evaluating an injured employee’s ability, this detailed physical job description can assist in identifying possible adaptations, restrictions, and safety concerns that may need to be addressed to prevent further injury.
What can I expect from an FCE?
Depending on the case, the session may take 2 hours (Short FCE) or 3-4 hours (Full FCE). Your safety is the priority throughout the process, and you will be monitored closely for signs of pain, fatigue, or risk.
